RESUMO: O objetivo do presente trabalho foi verificar o efeito in vitro da triiodotironina (T3) na diferenciação condrogênica de células tronco mesenquimais do tecido adiposo (CTM-TA) de ratas, durante vários períodos e em várias doses. CTM-TA foram coletadas de ratas Wistar e cultivadas em meio condrogênico com ou sem a presença de T3. Constitui-se cinco grupos: 1) CTM-TA sem T3; e 2,3,4,5) CTM-TA com T3 (0,01; 1; 100 e 1000 nM, respectivamente). Após sete, 14 e 21 dias, foram avaliados morfologia celular, formação de matriz condrogênica e expressão de Sox9, agrecano, colágeno II e colágeno X. Para as análises foi utilizado o teste de Student Newman Keuls. CTM-TA expressaram CD54, CD73 e CD90 antes da diferenciação condrogênica. O tratamento hormonal não alterou a formação de matriz condrogênica e a expressão de Sox9 aos 14 e 21 dias e expressão dos colágenos II e X em nenhum dos períodos avaliados. No entanto, as doses de 0,01; 1 e 1000 nM T3 diminuíram a expressão de Sox9 aos 7 dias. Conclui-se que a diferenciação condrogênica de CTM-TA de ratas não é influenciada pela T3.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to investigate the in vitro action of triiodothyronine (T3) on the chondrogenic differentiation of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) of female rats, with different time periods and doses. ASCs were extracted from female Wistar rats and were cultured in chondrogenic medium with and without the presence of T3. Five groups were established: 1) ASCs without T3; and 2,3,4,5) ASCs with 0.01, 1, 100 and 1,000 nM T3, respectively). After 7, 14 and 21 days, cell morphology, chondrogenic matrix formation, and expression of Sox9, aggrecan, collagen II, and collagen X were evaluated. The Student-Newman-Keuls test was used. ASCs showed CD54, CD73, and CD90 before chondrogenic differentiation. The hormone treatment did not alter chondrogenic matrix formation, Sox9 expression at 14 or 21 days, or expression of collagen II or collagen X at any time. However, the 0.01, 1, and 1000 nM T3 doses decreased Sox9 expression at 7 days. In conclusion, chondrogenic differentiation of ASCs of female rats is not influenced by T3.

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a utilização das células tronco mesenquimais (MSC) no tratamento da mionecrose induzida pelo veneno de Bothrops alternatus em ratos. 75 ratos Wistar adultos foram distribuídos em três grupos experimentais. G1 e G2 receberam 120μg de veneno de B. alternatus, enquanto o G3 recebeu apenas 200μL de PBS. Três dias após a administração do veneno, os ratos do grupo G1 foram tratados com 5.0 x 106 MSC, enquanto G2 e G3 receberam exclusivamente PBS. A cada três dias, amostras de sangue e tecido muscular foram coletadas de cinco animais de cada grupo para avaliação bioquímica sérica e patológica, respectivamente. A análise histológica revelou lesão muscular mais intensa após a aplicação das MSC, caracterizada pela desorganização e perdas das fibras musculares, com necrose focal e infiltrado inflamatório mononuclear. É possível concluir que a utilização das MSC para o tratamento da lesão local causada pela inoculação do veneno B. alternatus deteriorou a regeneração muscular e interferiu com o processo de cicatrização.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in the treatment of myonecrosis induced by Bothrops alternatus venom in rats. Seventy-five male adult Wistar rats were divided into three experimental groups. G1 and G2 were injected in the gastrocnemius muscle with 120μg of B. alternatus venom, while G3 received 200μL of PBS only. Three days after the venom injection, 12 rats from G1 were treated with 5.0 x 106 MSC in PBS, whereas G2 and G3 rats received PBS. Every three days, blood and muscle samples of five animals from each group were taken for serum biochemical and pathological analyses. Histological examinations showed more intense muscle lesions following MSC treatment, characterized by disorganization and loss of muscle fibers, with focal necrosis and inflammatory infiltration by mononuclear cells. In conclusion, the use of MSC for the treatment of local damage caused by inoculation of B. alternatus venom impaired muscle regeneration and interfered in the healing process.

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate, in rat offspring, bone changes induced by excess maternal thyroxin during pregnancy and lactation, and to assess the reversibility of these changes after weaning. Material and methods Twenty Wistar rats were distributed in two groups, hyperthyroid and control, that were treated daily with L-thyroxin (50 mcg/animal) and placebo, respectively. The treatment was initiated seven days before mating and continued throughout pregnancy and lactation. From every female of each of the two groups, two offspring were euthanized after birth, two at 21 days of age (weaning), and two at 42 days of age (21 days after weaning). In newborns, the length of pelvic and thoracic limbs were measured, and in the other animals, the length and width of the femur and humerus were measured. Bones were dissected, decalcified, embedded in paraffin, and analyzed histomorphometrically. Results Excess maternal thyroxin significantly reduced the length of the pelvic limb in neonates. In 21-day-old individuals, excess maternal thyroxine reduced the length and the width of the femur and the humerus. It also increased thickness of the epiphyseal plate and the percentage of trabecular bone tissue. In 42-day-old individuals, there were no significant differences between groups in relation to the parameters evaluated in the previous periods. Conclusion Excess maternal thyroxine reduced growth in suckling rats both at birth and at weaning, and it also increased the percentage of trabecular bone tissue in 21-day-old animals. OBJETIVO: Avaliar os efeitos in vitro da cafeína na proliferação, apoptose e expressão de transcriptos gênicos de diferenciação condrogênica na cartilagem de crescimento. MÉTODO: As epífises cartilaginosas de fêmures de ratos neonatos foram divididas em dois subgrupos: os tratados com cafeína e o grupo controle, ambos observados nos tempos de 0, 7, 14 e 21 dias. As epífises cartilaginosas de fêmures de cada subgrupo e de cada tempo foram submetidas à histomorfometria, análise imunoistoquímica, técnica de túnel e RT-PCR em tempo real. RESULTADO: A diminuição da atividade proliferativa e o aumento de condroblastos em apoptose aos 21 dias foram encontrados em ambos os subgrupos. Entretanto a diminuição da proliferação celular causada pela cafeína foi menor quando comparada ao grupo controle e aumentou significativamente a expressão de transcriptos gênicos para diferenciação condrogênica, representada pelo SOX-9 e pelo RUNX-2. Entretanto o cultivo in vitro com cafeína demostrou efeitos antagônicos: apesar dos efeitos positivos na proliferação e diferenciação de condroblatos, cafeína aumentou a apoptose, caracterizada pelo aumento da expressão de caspase-3 e do numero de células em apoptose (p< 0.05). CONCLUSÃO: A cafeína apresenta efeitos antagônicos in vitro na cartilagem em crescimento, aumentando a proliferação, diferenciação e apoptose celular. Estudo experimental.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the in vitro effects of caffeine on proliferation, apoptosis and gene transcripts expression of chondrogenic differentiation in growth cartilage. METHODS: The cartilaginous epiphyses of femurs of newborn rats, were divided into two subgroups: treated with caffeine and control group, both observed over the time periods of 0, 7, 14 and 21 days. The cartilaginous epiphyses of femurs of each subgroup and each time span were subjected to histomorphometrics, immunohistochemical analysis, tunel technique and RT-PCR in real time. RESULTS: The decrease in proliferative activity and the increase of apoptotic chondroblasts at 21 days were found regardless of the subgroup. However, the decrease in cell proliferation caused by caffeine was lower than in the control group and significantly increased the expression of gene transcripts for chondrogenic differentiation, represented by SOx-9 and RUNx-2. However, the in vitro culture with caffeine revealed antagonistic effects: despite the positive effect on chondroblasts proliferation and differentiation, caffeine increased apoptosis, characterized by increased expression of caspase-3 and of the number of cells undergoing apoptosis (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Caffeine presents antagonistic effects in vitro on growth cartilage, increasing the proliferation, differentiation and cell apoptosis. Experimental Study.

A proteína verde fluorescente (GFP) foi originalmente descoberta no cnidário Aequorea victoria. Células-tronco GFP positivas podem ser rastreadas in vivo quando usadas na terapia de doenças. No entanto, no osso, a fluorescência gerada pela GFP pode ser perdida durante o processo de descalcificação, dificultando o rastreamento das células-tronco usadas no tratamento de doenças ou defeitos ósseos. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar diferentes técnicas de preservação da GFP no tecido ósseo descalcificado. Foram utilizados fêmures de ratas GFP Lewis distribuídos em quatro grupos: 1) descalcificado em ácido fórmico e incluído em parafina; 2) descalcificado em ácido fórmico e submetido à criomicrotomia; 3) descalcificado em EDTA e incluído em parafina; e 4) descalcificado em EDTA com criomicrotomia. Secções de tecido ósseo de todos os grupos foram analisadas para identificação da fluorescência natural e posteriormente submetidas à imunofluorescência, sendo utilizados anti-GFP e Alexa Flúor 555. As imagens foram obtidas por microscopia confocal. Osteócitos, osteoblastos e células da medula óssea de ratos GFP somente tiveram sua fluorescência natural preservada no tecido ósseo descalcificado em EDTA e submetido à microtomia por congelação. Nos demais grupos, houve perda da fluorescência natural, e as células GFP somente puderam ser identificadas com o uso da reação de imunofluorescência com anti-GFP. Conclui-se que a descalcificação em EDTA e a criomicrotomia são as melhores técnicas para preservar a fluorescência natural das células GFP no tecido ósseo e que a visualização de células GFP em tecido ósseo descalcificado em ácido fórmico e incluído em parafina somente pode ser realizada com o uso da técnica de imunofluorescência.

Green fluorescent protein (GFP) was originally derived from the cnidarians Aequorea victoria. GFP-positive stem cells can be tracked in vivo when used in the therapy of diseases. However, in the bone, the fluorescence generated by GFP can be lost during the decalcification process, hindering the tracking of stem cells used in the treatment of diseases or bone defects. The aim of this study was to compare different techniques of preservation of GFP in the decalcified bone tissue. Femurs of female Lewis GFP rats were distributed in four groups: 1) decalcified in formic acid and paraffin-embedded; 2) decalcified in formic acid submitted to cryomicrotomy; 3) decalcified in EDTA and paraffin-embedded and 4) decalcified in EDTA with cryomicrotomy. Sections of bone tissue of all the groups were analyzed for identification of the natural fluorescence and subsequently submitted to the immunofluorescence using anti-GFP and Alexa Flúor 555. The images were obtained by confocal microscopy. Osteocytes, osteoblasts and bone marrow cells of GFP rats only had natural fluorescence preserved in the bone tissue decalcified in EDTA and submitted to cryomicrotomy. In others groups there were loss of the natural fluorescence and the GFP cells could be only identified with the use of the immunofluorescence with anti-GFP. In conclusion, the decalcification in EDTA and the cryomicrotomy are the best techniques to preserve the natural fluorescence of the GFP cells in the bone tissue and the GFP cells in bone tissue decalcified in formic acid and paraffin-embedded can be visualized only with the use of the immunofluorescence with anti-GFP.

O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar se o hipertireoidismo potencializa a osteopenia causada pela lactação. Foram utilizadas 24 ratas adultas distribuídas em quatro grupos: eutireóideo não lactante (controle), eutireóideo lactante, hipertireóideo não-lactante e hipertireóideo lactante. Todos os animais foram necropsiados, 20 dias após a gestação. As vértebras torácicas e lombares, o fêmur e a tíbia foram colhidos, descalcificados e submetidos à análise histomorfométrica. O grupo eutireóideo lactante apresentou osteopenia intensa em todos os sítios ósseos estudados. No grupo hipertireóideo não-lactante, não houve alteração da porcentagem de tecido ósseo trabecular nos sítios analisados. No grupo hipertireóideo lactante, havia osteopenia na tíbia e no fêmur, semelhante à do grupo eutireóideo lactante. Mas a porcentagem de tecido ósseo trabecular em todos os corpos vertebrais foi significativamente maior em comparação ao grupo eutireóideo lactante. Conclui-se que o hipertireoidismo não agrava a osteopenia lactacional em ratas, mas minimiza a osteopenia vertebral por estimular a atividade osteoblástica.

The objective of this study was to verify if hyperthyroidism potentiates the osteopenia lactational. 24 adult female rats were distributed in four groups: euthyroid no lactating (control), euthyroid lactating, hyperthyroid no lactating and hyperthyroid lactating. 20 days after gestation, all the animals were necropsied. The thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, the femur and tibia were decalcified and processed for histomorphometric analysis. The euthyroid lactating group presented intense osteopenia in the studied bones. In the hyperthyroid no lactating group, there was not any change in trabecular bone percentage in none of the analyzed bone. In the hyperthyroid lactating group, there was osteopenia in the tibia and femur, similar to the one in the euthyroid lactating group. But the trabecular bone percentage in all the vertebral bodies was significantly larger in comparison with the euthyroid lactating group. It was concluded that the hyperthyroidism does not potentiate the osteopenia lactational in female rats, but it minimizes the vertebral osteopenia once it stimulates the osteoblastic activity.

A osteoporose é uma doença cada vez mais diagnosticada em mulheres e homens de todo o mundo. Embora os esteróides sexuais sejam importantes na gênese da osteoporose, a inatividade física constitui um fator de risco. O exercício físico atua no osso por efeito direto, via força mecânica, ou indireto, mediado por fatores hormonais. Mas os mecanismos pelos quais a atividade física melhora a massa óssea ainda não são totalmente conhecidos. Baseando-se nos resultados que demonstram os efeitos benéficos da atividade física no tecido ósseo, a prática de esportes vem sendo cada vez mais indicada na prevenção e até mesmo no tratamento da osteoporose. O objetivo desta revisão é descrever os efeitos da atividade física no tecido ósseo normal e na prevenção e tratamento da osteoporose.

Osteoporosis has been increasingly diagnosed in women and men worldwide. Although the sexual steroids are important in the genesis of human osteoporosis, it is believed that the lack of physical activity constitutes a risk factor. Physical activity acts on the bone by direct effect via mechanical force, or indirect effect through hormonal factors. However, the mechanism through which physical activity improves the bone mass is not completely known. Sports practice has been increasingly recommended for prevention and even treatment of osteoporosis based on the results that have demonstrated the beneficial effects of physical activity on the bone tissue. The goal of this review is to describe the effects of physical activity in the normal bone tissue and on the osteoporosis prevention and treatment.

La osteoporosis es una enfermedad que cada vez más se diagnostica en mujeres y hombres de todo el mundo. Aunque los esteroides sexuales sean importantes en la génesis de la osteoporosis, la inactividad física constituye un factor de riesgo. El ejercicio físico actúa en el hueso de forma directa, vía fuerza mecánica, o indirecta, mediado por factores hormonales. Sin embargo la patogénesis por la que la actividad física mejora la masa ósea todavía no es totalmente conocida. Con base en los resultados que demuestran los efectos benéficos de la actividad física en el tejido óseo, la práctica de deportes viene siendo indicada cada vez más como medio de prevención y hasta incluso como tratamiento de la osteoporosis. El objetivo de esta revisión es describir los efectos de la actividad física en el tejido óseo normal y en la prevención y tratamiento de la osteoporosis.

O osteócito vem sendo alvo de pesquisas recentes. A avaliação in situ de sua morfologia, da atividade e das características de suas conexões é difícil, portanto é realizada apenas com técnicas avançadas. Devido à importância desse tipo celular na manutenção da matriz óssea, este estudo propõe uma técnica de coloração pela prata como alternativa para o estudo do osteócito e suas conexões em tecido ósseo desmineralizado e parafinado. Cortes de 4µm do fêmur de ratas foram desmineralizados, desparafinados em xilol e hidratados em concentrações decrescentes de álcool etílico (ETOH) e água miliQ. Para a impregnação foram utilizadas soluções de nitrato de prata a 50% e de ácido fórmico a 1% com 2% de gelatina microbiológica em estufa a 40ºC. Essa técnica permite visualizar facilmente as bordas lacunares dos osteócitos e suas conexões, proporcionando uma alternativa simples e eficaz para o estudo da morfologia desse tipo celular até então ainda não proposta com essa finalidade.

The osteocyte has been the subject of recent research; however the in situ evaluation of its morphology, activity and connection characteristics is difficult and has been performed solely through advanced techniques. Due to the importance of this type of cell in the maintenance of the bone matrix, this study proposes a technique of silver staining as an alternative for the study of the osteocyte and its connections in demineralized and paraffined bone tissue. Cuts of 4µm from the femur of female rats were de-mineralized, deparaffined in xylol and hydrated in decreasing concentrations of ETOH and miliQ water. For the impregnation, solutions of silver nitrate at 50% and formic acid at 1% with 2% microbiological gel were used and incubated at 40ºC. This technique allows the easy visualizing of the osteocytes lacunae edges and its connections, offering a simple and efficient alternative to the study of this type of cellular morphology, so far not proposed with this purpose.

Foi estudada a relação tireóide-gônadas e sua influência sobre a morfologia óssea de ratas Wistar, com cinco meses de idade, castradas e induzidas ao hipertireoidismo ou mantidas em eutireoidismo por período de 30, 60 e 90 dias. Ratas não castradas foram mantidas nas mesmas condições e serviram como controle. Ao final de cada período, foram determinadas as concentrações plasmáticas de T4 livre, progesterona e estradiol. Os ossos de cada grupo foram submetidos às análises radiológica e histológica. O hipertireoidismo nas ratas não castradas levou à alteração da morfologia do osso, variável ao longo do período experimental, conduzindo, aos 60 dias, à perda de osso trabecular por aumento da reabsorção óssea. Aos 90 dias não houve perda óssea porque o aumento da reabsorção foi acompanhado por maior aposição óssea. Nas ratas eutireóideas castradas, a diminuição dos níveis de progesterona inibiu a aposição óssea, causando, aos 30 dias, pequena perda do osso trabecular das vértebras lombares e do osso alveolar, que se intensificou aos 60 e 90 dias, atingindo também o osso cortical. A administração de tiroxina nas ratas castradas reduziu a osteopenia decorrente da castração aos 60 dias, mas não aos 90 dias, quando a perda óssea foi mais extensa. Conclui-se que o hipoprogesteronismo e o hipoestrogenismo alteram o metabolismo ósseo e que a resposta do osso ao hipertireoidismo depende do perfil plasmático dos esteróides sexuais, do tempo de exposição e da configuração do tecido ósseo.

The relationship between thyroid, gonads and bone morphology was investigated in 5 month-old Wistar rats, castrated and kept in hyperthyroid or euthyroid state for periods of 30, 60 and 90 days. A non-castrated control group was maintained in the same condition. At the end of each period, plasma concentrations of free T4, progesterone and estradiol were measured. The bones from each group were submitted to radiological and histological analysis. Hyperthyroidism in intact rats caused variation in bone morphology throughout the experiment, leading to loss of trabecular bone tissue at day 60, due to increased bone resorption. At day 90 there was no bone loss, because the increase in bone resorption was accompanied by higher bone apposition. In castrated euthyroid rats reduction in progesterone levels inhibited the bone apposition, causing a slight loss of trabecular bone tissue in vertebrae and alveolar bone at day 30, which was intensified at days 60 and 90, affecting cortical bone tissue. The administration of thyroxine to castrated rats reversed osteopenia at days 30 and 60, which did not occur at day 90 when bone loss was more extensive. In conclusion, hypoprogesteronism and hypoestrogenism alter bone metabolism and the bone response to hyperthyroidism depends on the plasma profile of sex steroids, time of exposure and bone tissue configuration.

Foi estudado o efeito do hipotireoidismo, induzido pelo propiltiouracil (PTU), no tumor de Ehrlich sólido, implantado em camundongos fêmeas adultas castradas ou não. Foram utilizados 40 animais distribuídos em quatro grupos: hipotireóideo castrado, hipotireóideo não castrado, eutireóideo castrado e eutireóideo não castrado. Os animais receberam uma injeção de células neoplásicas no coxim plantar esquerdo. A curva de crescimento tumoral foi determinada por mensurações da pata inoculada durante 12 dias quando os animais foram necropsiados. A hipofunção tireoidiana reduziu o tamanho do tumor de Ehrlich nos animais castrados. Embora o crescimento neoplásico tenha sido menor, o diâmetro nuclear médio e o número de regiões organizadoras de nucléolos (NORs) e de mitoses/campo foram maiores. Conclui-se que o hipotireoidismo retarda o crescimento do tumor de Ehrlich sólido, sem alterar as características celulares de malignidade, que o efeito isolado da castração causa alterações discretas e que a associação hipotireoidismo-castração potencializa o retardo do crescimento do tumor de Ehrlich sólido.

The effect of hypothyroidism on the solid form of the Ehrlich tumor in intact or castrated adult female mice was studied. Hypothyroidism was induced by treatment with propylthiouracil (PTU). Forty mice were divided into four groups: castrated hypothyroid, intact hypothyroid, castrated euthyroid, and intact euthyroid. The mice were inoculated with suspension cells into the left footpad. The tumor growth curve was determined by measuring the inoculated footpad during 12 days. At the end of the experimental period the mice were sacrificed. Hypothyroidism was associated with a reduction in size of the tumor only in the castrated animals. Although the neoplastic growth was lower, mean nuclear diameter, number of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs), and area of mitosis were higher. In conclusion, hypothyroidism resulted in a delayed growth of the tumor, but it did not affect the malignant features of the neoplastic cells. In addition, the isolated effect of castration caused only mild alterations, whereas hypothyroidism associated with castration resulted in a more prominent delay in the growth rate of the Ehrlich tumor.

O efeito do hipotireoidismo sobre o metabolismo ósseo e as paratireóides na deficiência ou suficiência dos esteróides ovarianos foi estudado em 32 ratas Wistar, com 2 meses de idade, distribuídas em 4 grupos de 8: eutireóideo não castrado (ENC), eutireóideo castrado (EC), hipotireóideo não castrado (HNC) e hipotireóideo castrado (HC). Após 120 dias de tratamento, as ratas foram sacrificadas e o plasma colhido para dosagem de T4 livre. Foi evidenciada hipertrofia das paratireóides somente no grupo HNC. As ratas do grupo HNC apresentaram osteopenia de maior extensão e intensidade, decorrente do menor crescimento, da inibição da aposição e do aumento da reabsorção ósseas. Nas ratas EC, a osteopenia foi causada por menor aposição e aumento da reabsorção ósseas. Embora a osteopenia na associação hipotireoidismo-castração tenha sido quase sempre mais intensa em relação à das ratas EC, sua intensidade, quando comparada à osteopenia dos animais HNC, foi variável e dependente do sítio ósseo estudado. Apesar de causar necrose dos ossos de maior metabolismo, a associação hipotireoidismo-castração não potencializou a osteopenia decorrente da ação isolada do hipotireoidismo até os 120 dias de tratamento.

The effect of hypothyroidism on bone metabolism and the parathyroids in states of deficiency or sufficiency of sex steroids was studied in 32 two-months-old female Wistar rats distributed in 4 groups of 8 animals each: intact euthyroid (IE), castrated euthyroid (CE), intact hypothyroid (IH) and castrated hypothyroid (CH). After 120 days of treatment, animals were sacrificed and plasma taken to assess free T4. Hyperplasia or hypertrophy of all parathyroids were evident only in IH and CE groups. Of all groups, IH rats presented the most extensive osteopenia, reaching lumbar vertebrae, dental alveolae (jaw and mandible) and long bones. In this group osteopenia resulted from the reduced bone growth, inhibition of bone apposition and return of bone resorption. Although osteopenia in the CH group was almost always more intense in relation to osteopenia presented by CE rats, its intensity was variable when compared to IH rats and dependent on the region studied. Even though it also caused necrosis of higher metabolism bones, the association hypothyroidism-castration did not potentialize the resultant osteopenia of the isolated action of hypothyroidism or castration until 120 days of treatment.

Apesar da dedicação incessante dos pesquisadores no estudo da osteoporose, muito ainda necessita ser elucidado. A deficiência dos esteróides sexuais, principalmente a de estrógeno, é considerada a principal causa de osteoporose, embora existam inúmeros outros fatores envolvidos. O hipertireoidismo, por exemplo, é considerado um dos fatores de risco para indução ou agravamento da osteoporose e tem despertado o interesse para o estudo dos efeitos de T3 e T4 sobre o metabolismo ósseo. Embora o hipotireoidismo e a afuncionalidade das gônadas seja uma associação freqüente na mulher, a hipofunção da tireóide não é considerada fator de risco para a osteoporose da menopausa. Assim, o estudo da inter-relação entre os distúrbios endócrinos, tão comuns na idade avançada, e a osteoporose é fundamental, pois deste conhecimento poderão advir meios de controle e tratamento adequados, bem como a definição da real natureza do distúrbio ósseo. O objetivo desta revisão é apresentar e discutir alguns aspectos da osteoporose e sua inter-relação com os distúrbios endócrinos da tireóide e das gônadas.

Despite the incessant dedication of the researchers to the study of osteoporosis, a lot still needs to be elucidated. The deficiency of sexual steroids, mainly of estrogen, is considered the main cause of osteoporosis, although a number of other factors are involved. Hyperthyroidism, for instance, is considered a risk factor for induction or aggravation of osteoporosis and has risen the interest in the study of the effects of T3 and T4 on osseous metabolism. Although hypothyroidism and gonadic dysfunction are frequently associated in women, thyroid hypofunction is not considered as a risk factor for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Thus, the study of the inter-relationship between endocrine disturbances, so common in advanced age, and osteoporosis is fundamental. Adequate means of control and treatment may result from this knowledge, as well as a definition of the real nature of the bone disturbance. The aim of this review is to present and discuss some aspects of osteoporosis and its inter-relation with the endocrine dysfunctions of the thyroid and the gonads.
